tears on a pair of old worn-out pajamas
patched up "for the very last time," he swears
"after this, they won't need fixing," he promises
because he's "gotten good at sewing"

bought him new ones
which he gratefully accepts but never wears
found it a bit endearing
but never could understand why he insists on keeping
that pair of old worn-out pajamas.

tried everything to fashion a change
"you look like a bum"
"these ones make your ass look better"
"these ones are expensive and designer"

all met with the same response: "is that so?"

"stop worrying," he says. "the day will come
when i'll grow
out of them
but for now, i love them despite the wear
despite the makeshift repairs
i know them. i love them. they fit."
