compass

a compass' purpose is to show you absolutes. it does not tell you where to go or where you've been. it shows you where you can go, but its needle is not an omnipotent being that will illuminate the right path for you in all of your endeavors. for this reason, i have not invested my time in learning how to use a compass. maybe that's why i have such a poor sense of direction.

i sometimes wonder which is the better decision - to wander aimlessly until i happen upon something wonderful ... or to stand still and wait for it to happen upon me. it seems the only times i am sure of my direction is when i can see that specific "something wonderful" straight ahead.

unfortunately for me, my entire life has not been set before my eyes - a road has not been paved between us. perhaps this comes as a result of my refusal to believe that the position of the stars at my birth defines the man i will be. if someday i realize that i was wrong, i will make sure that my future wife gives birth to our future son at the time and day that will make him strong, smart, courageous, and true.

until then i'll feel as though i'm only standing in fog. thinking fondly of the idea of a compass - of running blindly from where i am, knowing surely at the end ... there will be something absolute and something wonderful
